W14.What did I learn in this course?
W14. What did I learn in this course?
I have learned lots of things from this course and professor, Mr. Piotr.
I would like thank professor for teaching how to use Wikipedia and other
important things which I need to know.
First, I found that Wikipedia is very fun. When I edited articles last year,
I didn't feel interested in Wikipedia. But now I feel interested in Wikipedia.
I think the reason is that I use Wikipedia well than last year and know more about it.
Second, I learned that the crowd's power is stronger than technology.
I am proud of being a Wikipedian now.
Third, I could learn many interesting concepts like free culture, free license.
But still I am a little confused in getting the concepts. Because they are pretty
similar to me.
Four, I think we need to study about Korean Wikipedia more and we need to
find out why Wikipedia in Korea don't have enough users and activities than other
societies.
and finally Teds which we watched in courses were very helpful to understand collective intelligence and new social issues.
W13. Can Wikipedia disappear?
Topic: Can Wikipedia disappear?
I think Wikipedia will transform not disappear. Many people say that Social Network Service like Facebook will disappear in some years and some of SNS service actually disappear or decline, but still SNS exist. Because SNS is a communication channel and one of its functions is to share information and increase collective intelligence.
I believe that when people make together and share their opinion and information,
a site will last for somewhat long. Wikipedia is basically best place for collective
intelligence and there is no any sites which substitute Wikipedia.
Also Wikipedia has pretty long history and users. But there is any chance to change
Wikipedia's form and rule.

A. In this course, I learned about how to use wiki well. Before I have this class, I just think wiki is completion. Because already there were so much information that I didn't know. But after I edit some articles of particle subject, I found wiki is growing up now. And we also utilize wiki to have jobs, too. Still I am amateur of wiki, however I will have interest in wiki and update more interesting knowledge.

1. This article explains about many kinds of common criticism in wiki. Some problems of wiki are listed in here. And 7 reading material also write about criticism to wiki about collaborative practice, universal vision, encyclopedic impulse and technological inspiration.
2. Q. Can Wikipedia disappear?
A. I think wiki will not disappear. Because it is accumulation of people's knowledge. So it will become bigger and bigger as the time goes. Wiki is made with past fact and present issue. Therefore present issue will become past time and new present issue will be wrote in wiki. Wiki will change to perfect thing.
3. How to see number of visitors? Can we see total statistic?

1. This chapter explains about leadership of benevolent dictator. The cofounders of wiki are Larry sanger and Jimmy Wales. Wales who is owner of Internet content and search company hired Sanger in February 2000 to start Nupedia project. Wales leadership is central to find vision, active and contribute of collaborative norms. Larry Sanger was editor of Nupedia and be known as the chief organizer of Wiki. From these two cofounder, We need new responsibility and balance.
2. I think ordinary people who use wiki need some instruction of leadership. Because wiki is used and made by ordinary people. Before they use this, they have to learn about 'regard(solicitude)' in wikipedia.
3. Not regarding in offline about society will affect in online environment. How will it act?

1. In this chapter, he talks about the difficulties of consensus to make decision, meaning and practice for collaboration. It have trouble when there are disambiguation and rough. To make perfect consensus, we need deliberation, openness, time, precedence and facilitator, polling, voting. Wiki is example of a means of community decision making. Especially, its openness makes a new salience to the challenges of consensus practice.
2. It's hard to make perfect consensus. But if we endeavor to make this well, it will be fill people's need to make consensus. By collecting their own effort, the world of wiki will become everyone's opinion.
3. However, if there is only consensus, people's characteristic will be undervalued. How to prevent this?

W12: Discuss Reagle’s chapter 6
A) Wikipedia was started by Wales and Sanger and Its first try was 'NuPedia'.
Nupedia was run by experts which eventually led to be not active. So Wales and Sanger came up with Wikipedia that anyone is able to participate in. However, there was a serious discussion about leadership. Wikipedia is based on voluntary activity and collaborative movement, but they believe that Wikipedia need balanced leadership which is between authorial and benevolent.
B) I am not sure if I understood this context well. However, I realized that even if Wikipedia is open source and free space, it basically needs a certain formed leadership.
C)I think that it would be a interesting topic to discuss how leadership of Wikipedia works in Korea.

W10 blog topic: What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me?
I think this week blog topic is interesting. There are things which I found doing Wikipedia.
First, Korea Wikipedia tool box is not well made.
It's pretty inconvenient for users to make articles. I think that it need to be better.
Second, I think it would be good if Wikipedia recommend articles which could fit to me.
For example, when I edited certain article, Wikipedia recommend or show me other
articles lists which I might be interested in.
Finally, I think communications between Korean Wikipedians need to be improved.
Then Korea Wikipedia can have more active Wikipedians and be activated.

Q. what would make writing on wiki easier for me?
A. Maybe the best way to write wiki easier is find someone's interest. If someone have interest on some subject. He will find more information and study about that subject. Second is search on internet about some article reference. In online, there are so many evidence to proof our comment. And we can have idea and learn fact about that. Finally, to ask someone else how they think and how they know. Because, wiki is made with many original people's thinking. So if over three people agree, almost every people can agree with.

W9. W9 blog topic: Discuss Reagle’s chapters 3-4
1)Wikipedia is open space, which means that Wikipedia makes the
balance between openness and closedness.
Open content community like Wikipedia has the specific characteristics
of Open content, Transparency, Integrity, Nondiscrimination and Noninterference. Wikipedia is open content community, but It needs self-censorship. Since It never has any administrators.
2)It is interesting to explain according to characteristics like
Gender and enclaves.
3)Then, How can Wikipedia balance transparency, integrity and nondiscrimination? What is the way?

1. The term "open" is key of wiki community. In this reading, he define "open" as 4 characteristics. First, it illustrate whether anyone can edit wiki. Second, improvement of articles interacting with others without legal problem. Third, bureaucratization within wiki impair openness. Finally, closed group can be open through wiki community. Open content community is balance of open content, transparency, integrity, nondiscrimination and noninterference. In wiki, a lot of discussion about these vales and how to balance them. Therefore, wiki is qualified with descriptive feature of open content community.
2. I think community of wiki endeavor to make "open". Maybe it is not perfect environment of "open". But if people work hard to make real open content community, wiki will be perfect.

W7 blog topic: Why Free Culture matters?
W7 blog topic: Why Free Culture matters?
1) 'Free' in free culture is similar to a word, free like free will, free market not free in free beer.
That means free culture guarantee everyone's creative cultural activity and free culture is not
just free of charge. The opposition of free culture is 'permission culture'.
permission culture allows creators to create only if powerful or past creators permit.
2) I knew that the concept of free culture.
It is simple concept which guarantee everyone's creative activities and protect property, too.
3) It is pretty hard to understand exactly to what extent is free culture.
For example, parody MV like Gangnam style are free culture?
And Wikipedia is also free culture?
I think that free culture is pretty important because it makes active creators possible to create
more and more.

W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?
W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?
the people are more Quickly, frequently exchanging information on the internet than in the past. the present, to be civil online is to be information supplier. these days, separation of supplier and recipient have no meaning. everyone is supplier, recipient.
if internet users once gather in online, whatever will be made. therefore, civil online on the internet have a latent creativity. it is important how that latent ability is used. we have to prepare in order to receive benefits from the current.
W6 blog topic: How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?
W6 blog topic: How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?
1) Online is not quite different from Off-line.
According to the reading, Wiki community is also a kind of community and
besides It has community characteristics like other communities.
But especially Wiki highlights that participants need to have stay on neutral and good faith position. Because WIki is online, possibly anonymous and cumulative.
So It is important for Wiki contributors to understand Wiki's identity and follow
civil attitude.
2) I believe that WIki is quite civic community. I feel Wiki is collaborative and very
democratic.
3) I want to know other online communities which are similar to Wikipedia community
and ask participants to follow civil attitude more than others.

I think that the advent of Internet made the people who hate payment. charged services on internet are in disfavor, because anyone is able to acquire good information. I suppose that wikipedia’s requisite for success is free, so that many people gathered on wikipedia. first of all, people are gathered. it is easy to next step.
The more scientific technology is developed, the easier utilize Collective Intelligence. modern people will contribute to editing information by using laptop, mobile device, anywhere, anytime.
W5 blog topic: Can we trust Wikipedia?
I had suspected Wikipedia of reliability before I used Wikipedia. however, now, I think that Wikipedia is reliable website. many people edit Wikipedia’s contents endlessly. of course, some parts of Wikipedia are inaccuracy. Wikipedia is moving on to better thing. In order to be trusted, Wikipedia need more many user and their activities. it is very important thing. it is reason that I can trust Wikipedia.

1) Wiki is subject to critic from many people. Because the major points reliability of Wikipedia are the opinion that wiki is opened for editing by everyone makes Wikipedia unauthoritative and unreliable. Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources, making sure that all majority and significant minority views that have appeared in those sources are covered.
2) there is also article of reliability of wiki.
url is here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliability_of_Wikipedia
3) I am wonder how wiki become this scope. It becomes so big for all over the world. Is there great advertisement or with what?

W5 Can we trust Wikipedia?
1)
Reliability of Wikipedia depends on source and context.
The word "source" when citing sources on Wikipedia has three related meanings:
the piece of work itself (the article, book);
the creator of the work (the writer, journalist),
and the publisher of the work (for example, Random House or Cambridge University Press).
There are some types of sources. Scholarship, News organizations and biased or opinionated sources.
But self-published sources are not good reliable sources.
In general, the more people engage in making articles delicate the more articles are reliable.
So It is important for people to participate to edit a article.
Criticism of Wikipedia is related to accuracy of information, quality of the presentation,
systemic bias in coverage, sexual content, exposure to vandals and privacy concerns.
2)
There are too much information online which are not certainly right.
So It is very important to more people to edit one article to make it
reliable. Because All wikipedians are not experts, so we need to help each other.
3) The part,
"Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources" is hard to understand.
I would like to discuss it and want your explanation.

W4 Discuss Reagle’s Chapters 1-2.
Discuss Reagle’s Chapters 1-2.
(This is only about Reagle's Chapters 1 actually I didn't read Chapter2 yet...)
1) summary
Wikipedia shows the past scholars expectations.
As they said, the more techological skills are improving, the more information are integrated through web.
The key words are Good faith, Openness and consensus.
Wikipedia has norms like 'Neutral Point of Veiw' and It is run by its good fatih collaborative culture.
And the reason Wikipedia has increased is 'openness'.
But Still there are some issues about Wikipedia's openness because It is messy and hard to work together.
2) Actually I think the concept which is used to explain Wikipedia are somewhat vague and
not objective.
3)
Content in chapter 6 is pretty hard to understand.
I found leader vote who is chosen by wikipedian on Korean WIkipedia. And I would like to discuss the role and meaning of Leaders of WIkipedia.
Plus, the standards about Neutral, Good faith and Openness.

w4. Discuss reagle's chapters 1-2.
1) summarize in my own words.
In this book they define about wikipedia. Mostly, it focus on the cultural reception and interpretation of wikipedia. They want to make sense of social unease embodied in by wikipedia. The keyword of this reading article is "openness" of the larger wikipedia community. They want to explore about collective intelligence and collaborative characteristic. They think brainstorming for a free and open source encyclopedia might become recent stage of a long-running pursuit.
2) mention of any new items learned
I think wikipedia is just encyclopedia that we can find some information that we want. But thanks for this material and class, I can understand the process of wikipedia. Many people help each other by accumulating some knowledge together. In internet, they don't know each other and didn't meet before. In a rough way, I thought that this internet service is made just for our convenience at a time. But it isn't. They undergo a lot of strive by so many people. From now on, I will also start to add my effort.
3) identify question, concern or discussion.
Suddenly, I wonder who think work of wikipedia. Why he start this service and how to make this principle. He made natural but reasonable promise from each other. I want to know the beginning of wikipedia.

" Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it?
I think people use Wiki because large amount of knowledge are wrote about wide range. And it is convenient to approach, use and participate.
And maybe the reason of people's participation is their interest!
When they have just their knowledge, they don't know whether they know or not.
But by writing about their thinking, they can learn about the knowledge more specific.
And when they find works that they wrote, they fill satisfaction.
p.s. I have question!
I want to add some picture for wikipedia.
But I can't know about how to this.
There is 'help' for it but it is difficult for me understand.

Course syllabus
Our syllabus is still subject to change. The most recent version will be linked here: view or download
Introduction to the blog
This blog is a digital forum where students from fall 2014 class in
Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia at
the Hanyang University in Korea will discuss their weekly readings and
activities.
Each week you are expected to post a blog post at our blog and make a comment on another student's post. You can do so on one of the following three topics:
a) You can blog about the readings for the next week. As you are expected to do the assigned readings FOR the lectures they are assigned to, you are expected to post your blog and comments BEFORE that lecture. An ideal commentary should be about third a page in length (~200 words), divided intro three clearly labeled sections in which you: 1) summarize in your own words of materials you read; 2) mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned; 3) identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more. This question is likely to be incorporated into our class discussions. You are allowed to quote interesting passage from the text(s) you've read, but the quotes will not count toward any length requirements.
b) you can blog about the question poised in the syllabus for a given week (for some weeks it’s the same as a) above, but for some weeks it is different). The structure of the blog post should be similar to that of a), also you are welcome to incorporate other materials than simply the assigned readings for next week (you can also discuss the past readings, lectures, and anything else you find on your own).
c) you can discuss the edits you have made to Wikipedia in the past week. The structure of the blog post should be 1) summarize and link to your edit; 2) mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned; 3) identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is related to your edit that you would like to discuss further with me or others.
Deadline: Saturday midnight, for main blog posts and Sunday, midnight for comments. Exception: blog posts for the first week can be posted during the first week of class, as if they were for the second week.
Remember: in addition to the blog post you should also make at least one constructive comment about another student's blog post. Note the word “constructive”. Just posting “I agree” or such will NOT be counted.
Late posts and comments will NOT be accepted. Nothing stops you from doing them IN ADVANCE if you think you may be busy in the upcoming week. As an exception, students who have joined the class after we have started will be allowed to make up late blog postings up to the first week after the add/drop period ends. Add the note “LATE POSTING - ADDED” to such posts and inform me that you are doing so in order to make sure I don't discard your blogs as late.
Note that for this assignment you will need to create a Google Account (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount). Each student will receive an emailed invite to join the blog and become its co-author. You have to accept it before you will be able to post.
Also note that unless you configure your account to do so automatically you will need to sign your blog posts with at least with your first name and initial – so I know who is posting (you can set up your username to do so automatically). Unsigned blog posts will not be graded. Also, add a label to each of your blog based on your name and initial (so for me that would be Piotr K), this will make it easy for you and me to quickly find all of your blogs (how to label a post).
Here is an example of an excellent blog post (structure, content), although note this blog is on the longer side (about 800 words). You are not required to write so much, although if you do, you may receive extra credit.
If you need help with regards on how to post your blog comments, click here. There is a lot of help on how to blog, such as this video (one of many from the official blogger help channel).
You can receive information on when somebody comments on our blog, your blog post and so on by following the guide here
